Overwatch Season 5 featuring new Support hero Doctrine and Sombra's rework

Overwatch Season 5: Sombra Is Support Now — What Changed and What to Try First

Overwatch Season 5: A Grim Doctrine is live, and it brings one of the biggest changes to a familiar hero in recent memory. Sombra has moved from Damage to Support, a new vampire-themed hero called Doctrine has joined the roster, and the season introduces a new map, returning Battle Passes, and a limited-time Solo Leveling collaboration.

For returning players, this is more than another seasonal update. Some familiar strategies have changed, and there are new reasons to jump back into the game.

Here is what matters most in Overwatch Season 5, including the Sombra rework, Doctrine's abilities, the new map, and rewards worth checking before they disappear.

1. Sombra Is Now a Support Hero — Here's What Changed

The biggest gameplay change is Sombra's move from Damage to Support.

Players who relied on her old playstyle need to rethink how they approach fights. Instead of focusing primarily on disrupting enemies and dealing damage, the reworked Sombra can help teammates survive while weakening opponents.

Her new Hotfix ability allows her to target an ally for healing after a brief cast. It can also be used while she is invisible without immediately breaking stealth.

Her Cyberspace ability creates an area that heals allies while applying Weaken to enemies, reducing their damage and healing effectiveness.

Her ultimate, EMP, retains its ability to hack enemies.

What does this mean for Sombra players?

The biggest adjustment is learning when to support teammates instead of using every opportunity to attack.

Try to:

- Use Hotfix when a teammate needs immediate assistance.

- Position Cyberspace where allies can benefit from healing while enemies are pressured.

- Use stealth to reposition and identify opportunities to help your team.

- Coordinate EMP with your teammates instead of treating it as an isolated attack.

The new Sombra is not simply the old character with different numbers. Her role in team fights has fundamentally changed, so players should expect a learning period.

2. Doctrine Is the New Support Hero You Need to Understand

Doctrine is Overwatch's new vampire-inspired Support hero, built around manipulating life and empowering his team.

His Eternal Scepter heals allies and damages enemies at mid-to-long range. His mechanical bat-like drones can increase team healing and attack speed, giving him a way to influence fights beyond direct damage.

His ultimate, Deliverance, redistributes the balance of life during combat: allies gain Overhealth while enemy maximum health is limited for the effect's duration.

That combination gives Doctrine an unusual identity. He can contribute damage, strengthen teammates, and create opportunities for coordinated pushes.

How should you approach Doctrine?

Start by learning his effective range and the timing of his supportive abilities. His value comes from combining healing and offensive pressure rather than treating him as a conventional damage dealer.

Also, pay attention to balance changes. Blizzard adjusted parts of his kit in the October 6 patch notes, including his ultimate cost and several ability values. His live balance may evolve as developers collect player feedback.

3. The New Grímsvötn Map Has a Story Behind It

Season 5 introduces Grímsvötn, an Escort map set around a prison built into an Icelandic volcanic fissure.

The location is connected to Doctrine's story and Doomfist's attempt to free him. It is not just a new setting: it ties the season's narrative to the battles taking place on the map.

Players who enjoy Overwatch lore have another location to explore, while competitive players have a new environment to learn.

As you play, pay attention to sightlines, cover, and routes around objectives. Familiar strategies from other Escort maps may not translate perfectly to the new layout.

4. Overwatch Is Bringing Back Older Battle Passes

Missed rewards from earlier seasons? The new Unvaulted Passes system gives players another opportunity to progress through eligible Battle Passes from Seasons 1–15.

You can activate an eligible older pass and progress it alongside the current season's Battle Pass. Previously earned progress carries over, including progress on the Free track.

There are important limitations, however. Certain rewards are excluded from Unvaulted Passes, including Overwatch Coins, XP Boosts, Mythic Prisms, Prestige Titles, and Mythic Hero and Weapon Skins.

You can have only one Unvaulted Pass active at a time, alongside the current season's pass.

The smart move: check the available passes before spending your currency. If an older pass contains rewards you previously missed, you can decide whether its remaining eligible content is worth pursuing.

5. The Solo Leveling Collaboration Has a Limited-Time Window

Overwatch Season 5 also brings the Shadow Monarch collaboration inspired by Solo Leveling.

The crossover includes five themed skins:

- Genji as Sung Jinwoo

- Reaper as Igris

- Anran as Cha Hae-In

- Reinhardt as Iron

- Lifeweaver as Choi Jong-In

The collaboration is scheduled to run from October 6 to October 19, 2026, according to Blizzard's announcement.

That gives players a limited window to check the event and its available cosmetics. If these skins interest you, look at the in-game shop and event details before the collaboration ends.

Don't assume that a cosmetic will return immediately after the event. Future availability would need to be confirmed by Blizzard.

6. The Halloween Event Adds a Different Kind of Match

Season 5 introduces Mystery Madness: Graveyard Games, a Halloween-themed mode combining ideas from Mystery Heroes, Junkenstein's Lab, and Stadium.

The event features challenges and Offerings that players can use to influence which heroes return to the limited-time mode.

The appeal is variety. Instead of approaching every match with the same familiar setup, players can encounter unusual combinations of heroes and powers.

If you want a break from standard competitive matches, this is one of the season's features worth trying.

7. What Should Returning Overwatch Players Do First?

If you are returning for Season 5, don't try to learn everything in one session.

Use this order:

First: Play a few matches with Sombra and learn her new Support abilities.

Second: Try Doctrine in a suitable mode and understand how his healing, damage, drones, and ultimate work together.

Third: Explore Grímsvötn and learn its routes before relying on your usual Escort strategies.

Fourth: Check Unvaulted Passes to see whether any older rewards are worth pursuing.

Fifth: Check the remaining time on the Solo Leveling collaboration and decide whether you want any of its cosmetics.

This approach lets you understand the major gameplay changes first, then move on to the seasonal rewards.

Is Overwatch Season 5 Worth Returning For?

Season 5 offers more than a new hero and a Battle Pass. Sombra's move to Support changes how players approach a familiar character, Doctrine introduces a distinctive mix of healing and offensive pressure, and Grímsvötn connects new gameplay with the ongoing story.

The return of eligible older Battle Passes also gives lapsed players another reason to revisit the game.

The biggest question is how the new hero and Sombra's rework settle into competitive play. Balance adjustments can change the best strategies, so players should follow the latest patch notes rather than rely on outdated guides.

Our verdict: If you stopped playing Overwatch or want a reason to return, Season 5 gives you several new systems to explore. Start with Sombra's rework, learn Doctrine, and check the limited-time collaboration before it ends.

We'll keep this guide updated as Blizzard releases further balance changes and seasonal information.
