Modern Warfare 4 PC launch troubleshooting guide for Steam players

Modern Warfare 4 Won’t Launch on Steam? Try These Checks First

You click Play in Steam, but Modern Warfare 4 never opens. Sometimes the button switches back to Play; other times the game closes before showing its first screen.

If this is happening to you, avoid jumping straight to a full reinstall. First, identify whether Steam is failing to start the game, Windows is blocking it, or the game is crashing during startup.

1. Check whether the game is already running

Open Task Manager and look for Modern Warfare 4 or a related game process.

If a process is still running after the game window disappears, end it, then try launching the game once more. Avoid repeatedly clicking Play while Steam is still trying to start it.

2. Restart Steam completely

Close Steam from its menu, then check the system tray and make sure it has exited. Reopen Steam and try again.

If the game still will not launch, restart your PC before moving on. This gives Steam and the game a clean session without deleting files or changing settings.

3. Verify the game files

In Steam, open the game’s Properties and use the installed-files option to verify the integrity of the game files.

This checks for damaged or missing files and replaces files Steam can repair. It is a safer early step than uninstalling and downloading the entire game again.

4. Check whether Windows security requirements are involved

A launch failure can have different causes. Some Modern Warfare 4 PC players have also reported Secure Boot or TPM attestation problems.

If you see a Secure Boot, TPM, or security-attestation message, treat that as a separate issue from Steam doing nothing when you click Play. Record the exact error before changing BIOS or security settings.

Do not randomly disable Secure Boot or clear TPM settings to troubleshoot a game launch. Those changes can affect Windows security and device access.

5. Check for a known issue before changing drivers

If the game still closes before the first screen, check the game’s official support and known-issues channels for a current launch or compatibility problem.

Avoid installing unofficial fixes or deleting unfamiliar system files. If the problem began immediately after a driver or game update, include that detail when reporting it.

What to send support

If none of these checks helps, report:

- Your Windows version and PC hardware

- Whether Steam briefly says “Running”

- Whether any error message appears

- Whether the problem began after a game, Windows, or graphics-driver update

- Whether verifying the game files changed anything

A game that refuses to open from Steam does not always need a full reinstall. Check for a stuck process, restart Steam, verify the files, and note any security or error message. The exact symptom matters: a silent launch failure and a Secure Boot/TPM warning may need different fixes.
